What are the major important factors that I should consider while deciding the type of mattress to use?

Two major aspects that any mattress provides are support and comfort, depending on the degree of support and comfort one is looking for there are an array of mattresses that one can choose from.

What are the different types of mattresses available in the market?

Coir mattresses, Poly Urethane Foam mattresses, Re-bonded Foam mattress, Latex and spring mattresses are the main categories of mattresses.

How much would a good mattress cost?

Mattress as a product has evolved over the years from those made from traditional natural cotton or other unprocessed natural fibre products that were then available. Different types of mattresses based on their construction and materials used thus offering varied types of support and comfort functions are available today at MRPs ranging from Rs 4,500/- up to Rs. 85,000/- Investing prudently in a product on which one would rest spending 1/3rd of the day is always wise.

What is a rubberised coir mattress?

The base of a rubberised coir mattress is manufactured by compressing dehydrated eco-friendly coir rope curls sprayed with a rich layer of latex (extract of natural rubber) for elasticity and bounce. This is then furnished using different types of fabric and related material.

What is quilting and why is it required?

Quilting is a process of stitching a thin layer of low-density foam with the fabric covering the mattress that provides some comfort, improves air circulation and generally improves the looks of the mattresses.

What are the benefits of using 100% coir mattresses?

Pure coir mattresses have compressed bare blocks made of natural coir as the support layer furnished with different types of fabric and supporting layers. They are both healthy and eco-friendly.

Are mattresses made of EPE sheets safe for use?

EPE sheets are not healthy in that they emit toxic gaseous substances especially when subjected to hot temperatures and kept inside closed rooms. Mattresses made using EPE sheets though are more economical is not recommended as a healthy choice especially for use by children.

What is the normal life of a coir mattress, how often should a mattress be replaced?

The normal life of a coir mattress, which again is subject to the type of usage is 7-8 years. It is possible that the support offered by the coir bare may deteriorate with age and also that the coir bare by infested with bedbugs and other similar organisms.

What should be the height of a mattress?

The height of the mattress (measured in mms or inches is normally in the range of 4” (102mm) or 5” (126 mm). However, mattresses ranging from 3” height to 12” height are also available. Taking dimensions of the cot in length and breadth, where the mattress is to be placed is important while selecting the mattress.

How does one choose between a Coir mattress and a Spring Mattress?

Coir mattresses are lighter in weight and made of natural material. They normally last for 7-8 years, offer good body support and are normally preferred by people of older age. They are more economical as compared to Spring mattresses. Spring mattresses on the other hand offer more bounce and are furnished to offer more comfort as compared to support and thus preferred by people of relatively younger age. They are heavier as compared to Coir mattress and last longer.

What is Memory foam?

Memory foam is an advanced form of PU foam specifically developed by NASA for space travel. They are also used as comfort layers in mattresses as well as packing costly equipment. Memory foam has relatively less resilience as compared to normal PU Foam and thus offers more comfort when used in mattresses. Mattress made from Memory foam are expensive as compared to normal mattresses.

Do mattresses sag after continuous use?

Sagging (indentation) normally occurs when the body’s weight is applied in the same sleep position over a long period of time say several weeks. It is thus advisable to turn the mattress from head to toe every three months for better durability.

How many hours should one sleep normally?

In normal conditions 7-8 hours of sleep is advised per day.
